Fresh Start Catering

Fresh Start Catering provide schools with nutritious school lunches using food that is locally sourced and freshly prepared. They were looking for a new booking system that would allow parents to select menu choices for their child’s lunches and pay securely online.

the brief

Founded in 2007, Fresh Start Catering has grown from strength to strength, catering for more and more primary schools in and around Oxfordshire. Their existing ordering system couldn’t cope with the increased volume of schools they were now catering for, so they needed a new software system that could handle the increasing demands – now and in the future.

Fresh Start wanted a system that was easy to use and maintain and that could effectively manage the vast choice of meals they wanted to offer their customers.

Finally, with their customer numbers increasing, Fresh Start wanted better reporting capabilities to help improve efficiency and planning. Their current system offered limited reporting capabilities and it was a long, manual process to extract the data and create reports.

the solution

Using the Agile method of managing software development projects, we designed and built Meal Manager – a scalable software solution, offering a secure payment option and comprehensive reporting functionality. Meal Manager allows parents to create a login and profile for their child and select and pay for meals from a variety of hot and cold food options, for a particular day or a whole week.

The admin dashboard provides administrators with the tools to:

  • generate various types of reports e.g. meal options per school, per class and per pupil for a certain date range. Using this information the cooks know what food is required and how much food they need to cook in advance, reducing waste and saving time
  • set-up new terms, menus and classes with pupils for the existing schools
  • manage payments – including the option of manual payment – in case parents want to pay with cash or a cheque, rather than online
  • manage pupil meal choices – for example cancelling a meal if a pupil is not attending school on a particular day.

the result

Meal Planner has provided Fresh Start with an easy to use, effective online ordering system, that allows easy management of meal choices and a secure online payment system. The enhanced reporting capabilities of the application has reduced paper work and improved efficiency, saving both time and money. Combined, this has allowed Fresh Start to provide an enhanced customer experience and have a system that can accommodate their growing customer base now and in the future.
